CHECK OUT #1

1. JOEL PLASKETT EMERGENCY, “Drunk Teenagers”

Before you either blindly condemn or recklessly celebrate the sentiment inherent in the title, you should know this is only one chapter in a concept album that lays out the story of two friends who drink together, form a band, fall for the same girl, and destroy their friendship in the process. Set in Halifax, the specificity of the surroundings cultivates universality, much the way The Who’s tales of mods brimmed with detail without ever making you feel irrelevant to the proceedings. So far, this sounds like the rock anthem of the year. (From Ashtray Rock, out April 17, joelplaskett.com)
