In 2000 The Emergency rehearsed and recorded at Ultramagnetic Recording on the top floor of the historic Khyber building, while very often playing shows on the first floor of the bar downstairs.
Dropping microphones into the halls and fire escape after hours to help capture the building’s natural reverberation, Down at the Khyber’s unique sound helped spark a new chapter in Joel’s career after Thrush Hermit and was the first document of his important, long standing musical collaboration with The Emergency (Dave Marsh on drums and Tim Brennan, later Ian McGettigan and currently Chris Pennell on bass)
Down at the Khyber garnered a Juno nomination and the record’s great reviews in both Canada and the UK helped bring Joel’s songs to a whole new audience and is still a favourite with his fans.
